I'm a huge fan of grunge and agree that Nirvana are nowhere near the fathers of grunge but, come on, they are a very fantastic band. They also played a very important role in popularizing grunge.

And, despite not being grunge bands, groups like Dinosaur Jr., the Pixies, and Husker Du had a lot to do with the grunge that came out of the early nineties.

Nirvana is good, but they are in no way the forefathers of grunge. That's like calling the Sex Pistols the forefathers of punk, Elvis Presley the forefather of rock, and Judas Priest the forefather of metal. That's just ignorant of groups and people like The Stooges and Iggy Pop, Chuck Berry, and Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. As previously stated, bands like Green River, The Melvins, and Mudhoney factored into it a lot.

Forefathers of grunge would be more appropriately applied to Green River (who would later become Mudhoney) & The Melvins.
You can easily overrate them, just as you just did by calling them the forefathers of grunge. You are just further reinforcing my views/experiences with Nirvana fanboys (I live in Seattle, so I run into it all the time).

Hell no Nirvana is awesome and how can you overrate them? They deserve that rating and they are the forefathers of GRUNGE music!! Nirvana rox and so does Kurt C.

Notice that my comment was a contrasting reply to someone saying "nirvana is the best band ever." I was making a point using an extreme.
Yes they probably aren't the most overrated band ever. I think there are too many extreme opinions on Nirvana. So many people either really hate them or they worship them & Kurt Cobain.
