Barry Schwartz: The paradox of choice

http://www.ted.com Psychologist Barry Schwartz takes aim at a central tenet of western societies: freedom of choice. In Schwartz's estimation, choice has made us not freer but more paralyzed, not happier but more dissatisfied. Barry's problem is that his happiness is only subjective. My own happiness is good enough for me. If I need pants, I find a pair that suits my needs and move on. I don't agonize over how much better life could've been, I enjoy thinking about how much better life could be.

like my dad always told me, "less is more."

His conclusion for all of us needing a fish bowl went in the wrong direction, if you catch the little zen bit, that is where we should conclude. When it comes to contentment, it is all about the brain, from within the brain.

He's not saying "fewer" choices made people happier. If you paid attention you would have heard that too few choices are just as destructive as too many. What he is getting at is that there is an equilibrium at which the amount of choice available meets the amount of choice necessary to achieve happiness relative to the opportunity cost of said choice. Basically it's the economics of choice and the equilibrium is the point where the supply of choice meets the demand for choice

performing2Good- I think u missed the point. If we woke up and there was 50% less choice (and thats a very general term) do you think you would even notice? Would you notice that there were only 100 styles of shoes instead of 200? No of course not. He's using a very basic consumer based model to show how too many choices is intrinsically linked to "buyer's remorse." Now extrapolate that from a consumer based model, to all the choices we make every day and you will see that we are overwhelmed

I think this is a small-minded view. Fewer choices b4 made ppl happier - fine. But Barry is forgetting one important point...happiness is internal and it's also a CHOICE away. Choose to be HAPPY with your CHOICE. We don't go blaming or giving credit to a slew external forces for our own happiness. So if we wake up in a world tomorrow where we have 50% less choice, I assure you we would NOT be happier as a people and violent crime would increase overnight. Pick Something, Be Happy With It!

He wears his glasses down low on his nose and looks down when he talks so he is smart
